Playground Costs
The cost of a complete playground ranges from about $6,000 to $9,000 (CAD), depending on the size, and the cost of raw materials, labour, manufacturing, transportation and site preparation. Each playground site is assessed individually and tenders are put out for construction and installation, after which agreements are signed for construction and maintenance. For example, in 2009, the average cost of a playground in Afghanistan was $7,500. Examples of our playground equipment and their approximate costs are shown in the photos below.
Engaging Local People and Businesses
Playground Builders partners with local contractors and NGOs to build, install and maintain the playgrounds. We use a local bid and tender system whereby the successful local contractor builds the playgrounds using local materials and labour. This creates jobs for local people thereby improving the local economy. Jobs provide income, pride and dignity for the local people who otherwise must leave the region and their families to find work. The availability of local jobs reduces the local people’s chances of being among the millions of economic refugees in war torn countries.
In war economies, it is the children who are the innocent victims, the children who must quit school to work to support their families. We believe children should be doing what children are supposed to do - build childhoods. Our playgrounds provide for play, learning and escape from the terrors of war. Happy children make happy adults, and as the future leaders of these countries, they deserve respite, deserve play and the learning it brings. Happy children - our only hope for future peace.
Donations and Funding Activities
Playground Builders relies on donations from individuals, community groups and some businesses. Uniquely, our administrative costs are covered by an individual, so every dollar donated to Playground Builders goes directly to build a playground!
