Create Safe Play. Build a Playground & Build Smiles and Hope for Kids in Afghanistan.
There are 13 million kids in Afghanistan and most do not have safe places to play, socialize and create. Undetonated landmines are littered throughout the country. Your donation will be used to build safe playgrounds at schools and orphanages in Afghanistan’s most war ravaged areas.
This landlocked country has been in the throws of war for decades. As a result, it is one the poorest in the world. Generations of kids have grown up knowing only conflict, guns, bombs, injuries and death.
Afghanistan has a population of approximately 33 million of which 41% are under the age of 14. The average age in Afghanistan is 18, and life expectancy is only 51. The literacy rate for adults in Afghanistan is less than 40% – only 24% of women over 15 can read or write.
Due to ongoing conflict, there are more than two million war widows. Their children can’t go to school. They forfeit their childhood to work or scavenge as breadwinners of the family. Or worse, they must join a military group and become engaged in the ever-present conflict.
Every penny of every donation to this project will go toward building 28 playgrounds at schools and orphanages in 11 provinces throughout Afghanistan. The playgrounds range in size depending house many kids they need to accommodate. The average cost of a playground in Afghanistan is $7,300.
Your donation will cover the costs of fabricating and painting the play equipment by local contractors, preparing the playground sites to make them level and safe, and for installing the equipment by local people. Also included is a small fee for inspecting the playgrounds and documenting them for our organization and our donors.
Kids in Afghanistan are challenged with inabilities to attend school and a lack of safe places to engage in play and socialization, and places to just laugh and be kids. There are landmines throughout this country as well as ongoing fighting and cross-fire in many communities. The local economies are floundering and literacy rates are astonishingly low. Further challenges are to ensure that all funds go directly to the playgrounds, and that our work and expenditures are transparent and well documented.
Our solution is to bring joy and laughter to impoverished children by providing safe, cost-effective, locally built and locally managed playgrounds and play areas to as many communities as we can and as fast as we can.
We engage local tradespeople to fabricate the play equipment which provides jobs and incomes for the communities.
The most rewarding aspect of this project is that the impact is immediate! Just look at the thousands of kids on our completed playgrounds playing and laughing without fear. Comments from school principals indicate that school enrollments are up because the enticement of play attracts and keeps the kids in school. We all know that play creates laughter and laughter creates hope. Without hope there is no future. These kids are the future of Afghanistan and the prospect of peace, safety and prosperity for Afghanistan starts with these kids getting an education both at the playgrounds and in the schools.
Play, laughter and joy impacts the entire extended family of these kids. A happy child means a happy parent. Our playgrounds include sitting benches for family to watch their kids play.
Our hope is that eventually Playground Builders will not be needed in Afghanistan because the government and education managers will decide to include play in their curriculums for good.
